Our school believes that a third language means developing students’ language capacity and creating more opportunities for them to interact with people from different parts of the world. In view of this, we have been organising after-school German and Spanish courses since 2006.
In 2009, we were selected to be one of the 1,000 schools worldwide for the project “Schools: Partners for the future”. The programme has been launched in response to an initiative by the German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. German is offered to highly motivated students with strong language abilities. We aim at preparing students for internationally-recognised German language examinations such as the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Fit in Deutsch 1 exam, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in German or the Hong Kong Diploma of Education (HKDSE) – Other Languages (German). The course offers students with more diversity in language education and enables students to understand German culture and to communicate in German in everyday life. Scholarships of a three - week youth summer course in Germany are to be given to qualified learners. This is surely one great step to help students establish international contacts with other young people and walk towards global learning.
To facilitate students’ learning in third languages, a German corner is also established in SALC 2 providing them with modern multi-media learning materials and German reference books. Spanish learning resources are available in the school library.
