Sacred Heart Canossian College Summer Concert

The Summer Concert was held on 8 July 2024 in the College Hall with a matinee for students and an evening concert for the public.

It began with the Chinese orchestra and their conductor, Mr Sebastian Lai, opening the concert with an exquisite performance of 《採蘑菇的小姑娘Mushroom Picking Maids.  The string orchestra played Palladio, 1st movement: Allegretto, composed by Karl Jenkins, which was chilling and embodied harmony.

Next, the Junior Choir featuring SHCC’s youngest members and their conductor, Miss Renie Sinn, sang a breathtaking song in Cantonese called只有和聲In One Accord. This song is about spreading peace and it is the award winning song our Junior Choir performed in the 76th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. To finish, the choir ended with an absolute classic, Mamma Mia by ABBA.

In the evening concert, the music team invited St Joseph’s College to perform a jazzy and lively song Jada Jazz! with our vocal ensemble.

Following on from that, our String Quartet performed Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet, Op.33, No.6 in D Major, 1st movement. It was truly impressive.

Before the intermission, we had a magnificent percussion ensemble by S1-5 students performing a vibrant piece called At night when a beautiful star falls, composed by a Japanese composer, Hiroaki Kataoka.

The second half kicked off with a performance by the brass ensemble. They played a famous J-pop song called The Only Flower in the World, composed by Noriyuki Makihara. The School Choir and their conductor, Miss Renie Sinn, performed their competition repertoire for the World Choir Games 2024 in Auckland.  The programme included music in the style of North Indian folk song, Yunnan folk song, contemporary sacred music and a traditional Spiritual.

The School Orchestra, conducted by Dr Samuel Huang, brought the event to its height with three beautiful pieces from the Nutcracker, by Tchaikovsky, and lastly one from the movie soundtrack: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

The Summer Concert ended with a new orchestral arrangement of the School Song by our alumna, Miss Icy Wong. The audience joined in the singing with our Sacred Heart musicians and choristers. This new arrangement added solemnity and pride to the song, at the same time strengthened the school spirit of Sacred Heartists from different generations at presence in the College Hall.

The school would like to thank our School Supervisor, Sr Agnes and our Principal, Sr Veronica for allowing the students to showcase their talents, along with Miss Renie Sinn, the Teacher Advisor who made this concert possible. Thanks were also given to Mr Sebastian Lai, conductor of the Chinese Orchestra, Dr Samuel Huang, conductor of the School Orchestra and Ms Crystal Lee, the Brass Instructor, for guiding our young musicians to reach their potential. In addition, this concert would not have been possible without Miss Clara Ho, Ms Tung Hing Kwan, Mr Terry Cheung and their Stage Management Team; Miss Linda Yip; Ms So Wing See; Ms Dora Au and the Girl Guides; Ms Wendy Lee and the Photography Society; Mr Wilfred Leung and the Campus TV Team; and all clerical and janitor staff who provided ample support to make this concert a success.
